City's Youth Aim to Tackle Tough Issues

The newly developed Youth Advisory Council has identified issues our young people need to deal with.
Although they've been together less than six months, the new Youth Advisory Council, set up by the City, have already decided on some big issues they would like to focus on.
Five major goals have been identified by the Council, including increasing youth volunteerism, beautifying downtown Medicine Hat, increasing awareness for locally grown foods, and awareness of the Council itself. Chairman Austin DeHarnais said another issue he would like to see addressed is racial discrimination. "I think its key to prevent any racial discrimination from happening, if possible," he said. "We know its happening."
The Council has received the full support of the City. Mayor Norm Boucher has been especially encouraging, telling the Council to "not give up" and to not be discouraged if issues are not solved overnight. DeHarnais believes the make up of the Council and its diversity will be a major factor moving forward. "We have people from all the high schools, the College, people involved in sports and other cultural events," he said. "We've got a good strong group."
