Seniors Want Better Communication with the City

Wednesday, January 25th 2012 00:00

A lack of representation by the City on the Senior's Advisory Council is one issue clogging the lines of communication.

The Senior Citizens Advisory committee believes the lines of communication with the City are not clear and want representation by an alderman on the committee to remedy that.

At a meeting with Public Services on Tuesday, spokesman Doug Heinie said the problem is they do not report directly to Council.  "Basically, we wanted to present our frustrations with communication," he said.  "We feel our issues are not getting through to Public Service and to Council."

One issue with having an Alderman on the committee is that Council would then have to take over all of the appointments, and lose the ability to name their representatives.  If that is the case, Heinie said he'd rather leave it the way it is now.  "It's more effective if the seniors themselves elect the board," he said.  "They have input, and the citizens are electing the board.  If Council makes the appointments, they are losing that opportunity."

As it stands, the Seniors report their issues through the Social Development Advisory Board, who would then raise any issues to Council.
