Cypress County Votes On Fee-Per-Call Fire Service From City

Councillors passed the motion by a narrow 5-4 margin at their recent meeting.

After earlier this this year voting to terminate a fire service agreement with the City of Medicine Hat, Cypress County will move forward in negotiations for a new deal.  The County had approached the City wanting a mutual aid agreement, however the city dismissed that option and instead preferred a fee per call arrangement.  At Cypress County Council this week, councillors voted 5-4 in favour of pursuing the new arrangement and now staff from both the county and city will move to terms with the that option.  What the deal means for residents in the affected areas, is that instead of the city providing first response, it would be the county being called out and the City responding if requested.  The deal will be back before both councils in the coming weeks.  ~~  Warren Affleck
