Unemployment Numbers Creep Upwards In December

Statistics Canada says the region still is better than most in Alberta

There was a jump in the local unemployment rate to close out the last month of 2017.  Statistics Canada says the Medicine Hat-Lethbridge jobless rate increased to 5.9 percent in December, up from 5.4 percent the month before.  Despite the increase, this region still continues to have some of the strongest employment data in the entire province.  Red Deer had the lowest jobless rate in December at 5.5 percent.  Overall, the Alberta unemployment rate fell slightly to 6.9 percent last month and the national rate dipped to 5.7 percent.  ~~  Warren Affleck with files from Pat Siedlecki
